The Composites Research Group (CORE Group) is hosted by the Research Group Studies on Construction of the Research Unit Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS) of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon. Founded in 2009, the CORE Group conducts research, development and teaching activities on advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite systems for civil engineering applications.
Members of the CORE Group specialize in different types of FRP composite systems, namely pultruded profiles, strengthening systems, sandwich construction and hybrid construction, combining FRP composites with other construction materials. The main research areas of the CORE Group are the mechanical behaviour of FRP composites systems (from material to structural scale), connection technology, long term performance, durability, fire behaviour and sustainability.
The mission of the CORE Group is (i) to provide significant research contributions in the field of advanced composites for civil infrastructure, (ii) to collaborate with the industry in the development of innovative composite products, and (iii) to disseminate the most up to date knowledge in the field among civil engineering students and practitioners.
